Role: Senior Management (Director, VP [SaaS, Security, Messaging])
I have more than nineteen years experience in the software security industry and have held middle and senior managment roles in product support and development, product marketing, IT and operations. Born in the UK and now with dual citizenship (British and Australian) I left the UK in 1994 as Head of Product Management for Dr Solomon's(now McAfee) to setup an office in Boston, USA as VP Operations & Customer Service reporting into the CEO.
David was instrumental in the success of Dr Solomon's in Northern Europe and North America. Geoff Leary, CEO Dr Solomons (now McAfee).
I moved to Australia in 1996 and took up the role as Regional Manager for Symantec Security Response (R&D) in 1997 reporting into a Senior Director in California, dotted into the regional VP.

David was instrumental in establishing Symantec's Anti-virus Research center in Asia from scratch and dramatically improved the level of service we were able to provide to our customers in the region. Daniel Schneersohn, Senior Director North Asia, Symantec.
I joined MessageLabs as Technical Director in 2003 to facilitate the development of the business in APAC. Initially implementing internal IT and MIS systems, processes and procedures for the new Sydney office as well as managing the companies customer facing email scanning infrastructure across the regional data centers.
My role had input into product development and strategic sales and marketing in APAC, media & event spokesperson, industry liason and key account technical management for both global strategic partners and enterprise accounts. I reported into the companies COO in the UK and the local MD.
Since April 2005 I have been running a small company covering two disciplines, managed services (SaaS), delivering messaging security, training, policy and compliance systems to corporate Australia (Cleartext, www.cleartext.com) and Cleartext Systems delivery hosted communications & collaboration solutions as SaaS or on site solutions.
Running Cleartext has improved my commercial, sales and marketing experience, the company is a profitable, debt free business with close to 100% customer retention. We're currently ahead of the curve in the messaging SaaS market with our XMPP SaaS offering.
I have extensive experience in the IT security industry, regulary speaking (on TV, radion and in print) about and being consulted on IT security issues covering areas of risk, compliance, policy and IT security technologies. I am well connected in the private sector (Symantec
, RSA etc) and have worked with AusCERT
and the High Tect Crime Centre
I am a member of Anti-Virus Asia Researchers (AVAR
). I am a Director and Board member of the Internet industry Association (IIA)
, now serving my third term(2008-2010). I was voted onto the board as a Director and Chairman of the XSF
(XMPP Standards Foundation) in October 2008.
I have extensive management experience in areas such as leadership and motivational skills, effective team building, time and quality management and project management. I completed the SANS GIAC
Certification (a general IT security certification covering malicious code, intrusion detection, authentication and cryptography).
I project managed and chaired the AVAR
2003 conference in Sydney, Australia. This event is the biggest of its kind in Asia Pacific and attracted some 200 delegates and speakers from around the world. More detail, dates, employers etc here
Hobbies include R&D in the messaging systems (email, IM, security etc) areas, tarmac rallying and work.
